Artist, Naturalist & Local Luminary -
John Dodgson Barrow was a celebrated painter of the Hudson River School and a distinguished citizen of Skaneateles. He delivered the village’s Centennial Address in 1876 and later authored a richly illustrated history of the area. In 1900, he established a gallery next to the local library to display his life's work, endowing it for public stewardship—a legacy the community continues to preserve today .
From age 15, he painted landscapes and portraits—eventually producing over 350 works housed in the John D. Barrow Art Gallery at 49 E. Genesee Street, just steps from 34 State.
